Top Gear, love it or hate it, it did have some really amazing trips and races in its original format. In 2009 Messrs Hammond and May raced a letter from the Isles of Scilly in Cornwall to Zanzibar bungalow on Orkney Mainland. I am sure there are better ways to demonstrate the Porsche Panamera, but the Top Gear trio never did things the easy way. A race of 804 miles; a letter with a Royal Mail stamp and nothing more, versus the British motorway system and a ferry for good measure.
This little wooden shed still stands on the northern tip of Orkney Mainland in the small village of Birsay. Right on the cliff edge, it may not be the most northerly location of the British Isles but in a storm it certainly feels a long way from the tranquility of the Cornish Isles of Scilly.
How to find Zanzibar, the little house from the Top Gear Race
Zanzibar is located in Birsay. Follow the road into the village. On your left will be the old Earl's Palace. Stay on the 'main' road and follow the road as it swings around to the right. Zanzibar is on the edge of the beach on your left.
