A Smudge of Northern Lights over Orkney

A week in the north meant I was hopeful of seeing the sky alive with colour.  The sun had been quiet all winter.  No massive displays, surely the sun had to explode soon.  The moon was full, casting shadows across the garden and making life difficult to see anything in the sky properly.  Heading out into the night, the wind was howling taking the temperature well below zero.  We must have looked a sight in our jammies, boots and winter coats.  But there was that feel to the air.  I may be imaging it but on the nights when the lights are there, the atmosphere is different, charged and exciting even if nothing can be seen.  We stood there, adjusting to the light and then we saw the white cloud.  It didn't seem like much but on the camera but it was there.
